SPACER - Optimisation of porous electrode structures for redox flow batteries

The Chair of Electrochemical Process Engineering is part of the new SPACER (Shaping Porous Electrode Architecture to Improve Current Density and Energy Efficiency in Redox Flow Batteries) doctoral network, which is funded under the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The aim of the project is to further develop redox flow battery technology for sustainable energy storage. A total of 17 PhD students are being trained across 10 countries. Together, the consortium is tackling the materials science challenges of stationary battery storage – a key technology for the energy transition. Redox flow batteries store energy in liquid electrolytes that are pumped through an electrochemical cell. They offer independent scalability of power and capacity, a service life of up to 20 years and a high level of operational reliability. As such, they are regarded as a promising solution for large-scale stationary energy storage

Project Profile

Development of functionalised fibre electrodes using electrospinning and core-shell design. Tasks include the fabrication and targeted modification of porous electrodes, as well as the analysis of their morphology and electrochemical performance. The aim is to improve the long-term stability and efficiency of redox flow batteries. Through targeted improvements at the micro, meso and macro levels, new materials are to be used to optimise current and electrolyte transport and significantly increase the electrochemically active surface area of the electrodes.
