Electrochemical Process Engineering

Ming Cheng studied Thermal Energy and Power Engineering in Southeast University (China). During her fourth year of Bachelor, she went to University of Ulm (Germany) as an exchange student and finished her Bachelor thesis. She studied Energy Science and Technology as an undergraduate student in University of Ulm. She has worked as a student assistance on fuel cell systems in Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung (ZSW). For her Master thesis, entitled Cathode/Anode balance shift in full lithium ion cell, she finished it under the supervision of Dr. Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehrens in ZSW. Since 8.2019, Ming Cheng is working as a research assistance at the chair of Electrochemical Process Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Christina Roth in University of Bayreuth.

Ming Cheng’s research topic mainly focuses on vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Her project goal is to understand the catalysis of the negative partial reaction, while at the same time suppressing the undesired hydrogen evolution reaction, by modifying with elements such as bismuth and neodymium. These are going to be investigated by means of various synthesis routes and deposited with different loadings (either flat or nanoparticulate) on the surface and in the bulk of commercial carbon felts. The success of this strategy is to be characterized by microscopy and X-ray diffraction and verified electrochemically in 3-electrode setup and battery tests.
